Review of “Treating an Addiction to Internet Pornography”

small_coverI stumbled upon the site endpornaddiction.com who offers an ebook porn addiction treatment guide. I’m always interested in the options being presented for treating internet pornography addiction, so I dropped the $19.95 for this book, and had a look. At first glance, the table of contents looks like a lot of general information about porn addiction. The book is an Adobe PDF that is 72 pages long, and is described on the sales page as:

“an easy to read eBook on breaking porn addiction written by Frankie Orlando, a psychology graduate of Virginia Polytechnic and State University. …(This book) serves not only as a great introduction to online sexual addictions but also explains how to design a simple to follow action plan that can help you change your lifestyle.”

Much of this book is devoted to the effects of a sexual or pornography addiction on an individual and their spouse. I’d have to say one of the strong points of this guide would be in helping the spouse of a porn addict in some way understand this affliction. The “action plan” wasn’t presented until page 32, and described a technique which includes items like journaling, resolving personal triggers, and gaining personal accountability as well as working with a professional counselor to obtain a ‘formal assessment’ of your porn addiction.

Overall I’d say the ‘action plan’ is a little thin, but does provide important information for anyone struggling to overcome a porn addiction, but where this book really shines is in presenting information for the spouse of a porn addict.

When you purchase from endpornaddiction.com you also receive a download of a 40 minute video interview of a marriage and family therapist outlining different aspects and effects of porn use. There is also a forum started, however this looks like a new feature that hasn’t taken off as of yet.

All in all, a worthwhile read, especially for spouses of individuals struggling with internet porn addiction.
